Ampleforth

Ampleforth Abbey has been home to a Community of Benedictine monks since 1802. The Abbey church is open to visitors who might like to simply look around. Explore the beautiful lakes, trails and woodlands or join a behind the scenes tour of the Abbey’s orchards and Cider Mill to see how Ampleforth Abbeys’ famous cider and cider brandy is made.

Visitors can take advantage of the sports centre facilities at Ampleforth College and within a 5 mile radius there is fishing, pony trekking, golf, cycle hire and the newly opened cycle trails from Sutton Bank National Parks Centre.

The village also provides a well-stocked shop and Post Office, a five minute walk from the property. Both village pubs, The White Swan and The White Horse Inn, have reputations for good food.

Just a few miles away discover the pretty market town of Helmsley with hotels/pubs and restaurants.

Close at hand are Rievaulx Abbey and Byland Abbey and the National Trust properties of  Nunnington Hall and Rievaulx Terrace and Temples.

Further afield are Whitby on the coast and Goathland and Pickering in the North York Moors National Park.  Masham, Ripon and Harrogate are to the west towards the Yorkshire Dales National Park while Castle Howard, home of Brideshead Revisited and Scampston Walled Garden lie to the east, the historic City of York is 20 miles to the south, all within easy reach.
