THE LOCAL AREA

Helmsley & local area

Discovering the wonderful local area is a highlight of any stay here. And the following attractions are all within easy reach of the apartment.

The Norman Helmsley Castle dates back over 900 years. It has evolved over the centuries from a mighty medieval fortress to a luxurious Tudor mansion, a Civil War stronghold and a romantic Victorian ruin. The castle is open to visitors all year round, under the care of English Heritage.

Helmsley has everything you’d expect in a quintessentially English market town; a vibrant market square, independent specialist shops, unique places to eat and drink and an imposing castle.  It also has a walled garden, a bird of prey centre, a microbrewery, an open-air swimming pool, a luxury spa, a nature reserve, galleries and an arts centre.

From Helmsley, you can explore both The Howardian Hills and also the neighbouring North York Moors National Park, stretching across the Whitby and the coast. Varied walking routes are on offer for seasoned ramblers and those looking for a more sedate meander alike. It’s also a perfect setting for a cycling holiday, with miles upon miles of challenging climbs and satisfying descents awaiting your discovery – rest assured that the jaw-dropping views make the climbs well-worth the burn!

There are many historical attractions nearby including the majestic Castle Howard,  the ecclesiastical ruins of Rievaulx Abbey and Byland Abbey and the National Birds of Prey Centre in Helmsley.

Lying just 24 miles north of the City of York, guests staying here are perfectly placed to head into a city centre that’s brimming history and culture. Take a walk along the castle walls and marvel at the view below, or head to York Minster for some truly jaw-dropping architecture. Follow this with a wander around the quaint cobbled streets as you admire the architecture, peruse the local boutiques and discover York’s gourmet hotspots.

REVIEWS

We love to hear back from our guests to find out their experience with Beautiful Escapes.

May 2024

We had a very good week in Helmsley and I’m happy to give you a review which you can use if you wish.
Booking the holiday let was not a problem, when I emailed you I received a return call within minutes and the booking was confirmed
within a few minutes.
The information we received about the property we had booked was precise and helpful and covered everything we needed to know.
As for the property itself we found it ideal. It was furnished to the highest standard and all the appliances were top of the range. Its location also could not have been better, overlooking the delightful market square.
As for Helmsley, a lovely market town for a base, with a range of shops and coffee shops to keep you happy. There were also enough restaurants so travelling to eat was not necessary.  The most we had to walk to eat was about 100 yards, the shortest about 20 yards!
Overall a great week which we would highly recommend.
Kind regards
Brian
May 2022
The property is beautiful, Ralph and I really enjoyed the space.  Our every need was catered for and I could tell there was real attention to detail and thought put into what our needs might be.  The personal touches of wine and snacks was so lovely too.
Not many properties of this luxury standard allow dogs – so we felt really fortunate to enjoy a luxury property that was genuinely dog friendly.
The area is gorgeous… lots of lovely dog walks and nice dog friendly eateries and bars to visit.
The booking process was faultless. The level of service you provide is exceptional. I would love to stay again in the future, we wll defnitely recommend The Partridge and Beautiful Escapes to our friends and family.
Thanks so much for a lovely stay!
Kind regards
Sarah

Sheila & family, April 2022

We loved The Partridge, The owner Jill was so kind to come over and show us a few things. Helmsley is a beautiful town and the area was so much fun to explore, the castle, the abbey among other things.

My experience with Beautiful Escapes was very positive, good communication and I would use your service again.

Thank you

Sheila
