THE LOCAL AREA

The Mallerstang Valley is a beautiful valley which runs from the Moorcock Inn on the A684 Hawes road down to Kirkby Stephen. In places the road runs parallel to the Settle-Carlisle railway line, making it an excellent place for train spotting. The valley narrows as the road passes beneath Wild Boar Fell and through the picturesque hamlet of Outhgill, a couple of miles further on lies the romantic ruin of Pendragon Castle. Less crowded than other dales, Mallerstang offers a feeling of untouched wilderness and peace.

Pendragon Castle, nestled in the heart of Mallerstang Valley, is one of those evocative sites where history and legend blend beautifully with the dramatic landscape. Traditionally linked to Uther Pendragon, the legendary father of King Arthur, the castle is said to have been built by him although this is more myth than fact. The ruin dates mainly from the 12th century, built by Ranulph de Meschines. Its isolated position and romantic deterioration make it a compelling stop for history lovers, photographers, and hikers alike. Look out for the “dragon legend” it’s said Uther tried to divert the River Eden to form a moat but failed due to the dragon living in the area.
