Butler’s Cottage is a beautiful honey stone cottage set in 80 acres of private woodland on the edge of the Raithwaite Estate in the seaside village of Sandsend which boasts one of the most spectacular beaches on the Yorkshire coast. The cottage is beautifully appointed with plenty of space for relaxing, open plan living area with log burner and a well equipped kitchen. The garden is fully enclosed, has lovely seating areas and a large lawned area. It offers a restful place to while away an afternoon with a good book or simply soak up the wild life all around. There is a large terrace too, perfect for al fresco dining.

Just a short stroll from the cottage, head towards the beach for a healthy promenade walk North towards the Hart pub in Sandsend village and some lovely pub grub or turn South and you head straight into the famous fishing port of Whitby with its atmospheric history, and world beating fish and chips.

The beach is a dream for picnics, sandcastle building, kite flying – or just staring out into the wild blue yonder! It’s a great sandy expanse where you are able to walk right along from Sandsend village into Whitby at low tide. At Sandsend there are two beach café’s for your early morning breakfast latte and bacon butty or something more substantial throughout the day.

The beach is a five minute walk from the cottage and is available to dog walkers all year round – a small section at Sandsend village is out of bounds in the summer.

Head inland to discover the wild beauty of the North York Moors – a walker’s paradise.

Children aged 10 years and over and babes in arms are welcome.

*Building and excavation works are currently taking place at the entrance to the Raithwaite Estate

THE LOCAL AREA

The picturesque village of Sandsend lies on Yorkshire’s heritage coastline, between Runswick Bay and Whitby, you can enjoy a lovely walk along the beach to Whitby. There are fine views down the coast towards the romantic ruins of Whitby Abbey which is said to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Sandsend beach is popular with fossil hunters, fishermen and walkers.  In summer an area of the beach is zoned off for swimming.

There are plenty of beachside cafes, restaurants and a smattering of independent shops to explore.

We love to hear back from our guests to find out their experience with Beautiful Escapes.

Thank you for letting us stay your beautiful cottage, after a busy lambing season it was just what we needed. The whole weekend as one long memory, we loved to hear the morning chorus from so many different birds. We enjoyed the Hart Inn in Sandsend, it was very good, highly recommend.

Thank you,

What a beautiful cottage! Very well appointed, lovely littel touches and very dog friendly. Wonderful location, just perfect. We enjoyed lovely walks and it was so peaceful, we recommend the Hart Inn in Sandsend, a lovely, busy little pub. We will be back!

March 2024

We so enjoyed our stay in The Butler’s Cottage.  We know the area well as we live about an hours drive away from the East Coast, we also know the Raithwaite Estate quite well and have stayed at the hotel in the past. We liked the opportunity to take our dogs with us, we needed the  short break to ‘get away from it all’,  enjoy the beautiful scenery and sea air.   The cottage and gardens are well equipped, comfortable and sumptuously furnished, inside and out. I could have happily spent the whole break there by the cosy wood-burner enjoying the sights of nature through the picture windows.  We felt entirely at home.

We hope to return,

Nicola

Fish Cottage in Sandsend – great fish and chips.

January 2024

This place is perfect for a treat away, we had birthday fizz in the garden dome, great fun!

We loved visiting Whitby with its winding streets and enjoyed Saltburn-by-the-sea, just gorgeous. Watching the waves in Sandsend and drinks at The Hart pub was quite special too.

Christmas 2023

We enjoyed the Butler’s Cottage very much.  We really liked the area, Sandsend itself is small but has a couple of coffee shops, pubs, restaurants and is a nice walk along the front.  The walk into Whitby is about two miles each way and we enjoyed that very much –  blew away the cobwebs in a 50mph wind!  There is, of course, much more available in Whitby but we liked being away from the busyness but having it there when we wanted more choice.  There is also a regular bus service, although we didn’t use it.
The Raithwiate hotel, which is on the same estate as the cottage, was lovely although we only saw it in darkness.  We enjoyed a drink there one evening and it was a quiet walk up from the cottage.  The menu choice was good.
The garden is great and would be a big bonus in the better weather.  There were lots of logs for the wood burner, we certainly were never cold in the property.  The downstairs heating with the wood burner was perfect.
In all, we enjoyed our stay and would certainly consider returning.
Kind regards
Lorna

October 2023

We stayed during the half term week in this beautiful cottage, idyllic setting, ideal for unwinding. We enjoyed morning beach walks with the wind blowing and the sun shining, in Whitby we visited Bothams on Skinner Street, a grand cafe with all the trimmings it was like going back in time.

October 2023

Very cosy and welcoming cottage, we haven’t had good weather but we have relaxed in front of the log burner reading books, luxury!

We enjoyed a beautiful meal at The Homestead in Goathland, highly recommend.

We have stayed at Butlers Cottage twice now. We always go away for a walking holiday with our dog for a week in Autumn and Spring, and this property ticks all the boxes for us.
Beautifully furnished, everything worked, enclosed garden, 5 minutes walk to the beach.
Thank you

July 2023

This cottage does not dissappoint in all ways, this was our second visit and it was great. Nice addition with the garden Dome.

The peace and relaxation of this ‘Gem’ of a location along with the wildlife is second to none!

June 2023

Butlers Cottage was a lovely property, beautifully appointed and very peaceful. We loved watching the wildlife at the bird feeders early morning and evening.

It was lovely to walk down the path onto the beach for strolls and an easy walk into Sandsend to enjoy a leisurely drink and meal.
Whilst we used our car for travel it was good to know that there was a bus stop at the end of the drive should we require it.
We spent a couple of days covering the sights of Whitby then on our other days our trips included Staithes, Saltburn, Helmsley, Malton, Pickering and Goathland. It was an excellent base to explore the North Yorkshire Moors and coast.
Highly recommend a stay at Butlers Cottage and the booking process / information from Beautiful Escapes was excellent.

Wow! What a stunning cottage!!! We have stayed in a lot of different holiday cottages, Butler’s Cottage is so much better that anything we have stayed in before.

We enjoyed being close to the sea and walking along the beach with Buster our border Terrier.

Tip for other guests – Keep the bird feeder going and you will wood peckers, gold finches and many more birds.

March 2023

We loved Butler’s cottage, it was so comfortable and tastefully decorated, the owner has thought about everything you and your dog may need, the location could not have been better, lovely and quiet with local amenities close by and just a short walk to the beach.

The weather was unkind to us but we enjoyed a walk up through the forest to the bar, saw the deer each time, what a wonderful sight.

The Hart Inn is a lovely local pub in the village so much to see and do, great walking all around the area.

We would definitely book with Beautiful Escapes again, the whole booking experience was simple and efficient, it is good to find a company that offers dog friendly cottages of such a high standard.

We hope to be back, Sue & Peter Cartwright
