Butler’s Cottage is a beautiful, honey stone cottage sitting within the prestigious Raithwaite estate and just a five minute walk from the beach. The cottage is surrounded by 80 acres of woodland and complete with a 4 star hotel in the grounds. You can stroll up the hill to take pre-dinner cocktails in the stylish bar, a light bite, hearty lunch or afternoon tea. Enjoy fine dining in the Brasserie for a special treat. Or head east towards the beach for a healthy promenade walk north towards the Hart pub in Sandsend village and some lovely pub grub. Turn south and you head straight into the fishing port of Whitby with its atmospheric history, and world beating fish and chips.

The cottage is beautifully appointed with plenty of space for relaxing, open plan living area with log burner and a well equipped kitchen. The garden is fully enclosed, has lovely seating areas and a large lawned area. It offers a restful place to while away an afternoon with a good book or simply soak up the wild life all around. There is a large terrace too, perfect for al fresco dining.

The beach is a dream for picnics, sandcastle building, kite flying – or just staring out into the wild blue yonder! It’s a great sandy expanse where you are able to walk right along from Sandsend village into Whitby at low tide. At Sandsend there are two beach café’s for your early morning breakfast latte and bacon butty or something more substantial throughout the day.

The beach is a five minute walk from the cottage and is available to dog walkers all year round – a small section at Sandsend village is out of bounds in the summer.

Head inland to discover the wild beauty of the North York Moors – a walker’s paradise.

Children aged 10 years and over and babes in arms are welcome.

*Building and excavation works are currently taking place at the entrance to the Raithwaite Estate until end of December 2023

THE LOCAL AREA

The picturesque village of Sandsend lies on Yorkshire’s heritage coastline, between Runswick Bay and Whitby, you can enjoy a lovely walk along the beach to Whitby. There are fine views down the coast towards the romantic ruins of Whitby Abbey which is said to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Sandsend beach is popular with fossil hunters, fishermen and walkers.  In summer an area of the beach is zoned off for swimming.

There are plenty of beachside cafes, restaurants and a smattering of independent shops to explore.

REVIEWS

We love to hear back from our guests to find out their experience with Beautiful Escapes.

October 2023
We have stayed at Butlers Cottage twice now. We always go away for a walking holiday with our dog for a week in Autumn and Spring, and this property ticks all the boxes for us.
Beautifully furnished, everything worked, enclosed garden, 5 minutes walk to the beach.
Thank you
Jane

July 2023

This cottage does not dissappoint in all ways, this was our second visit and it was great. Nice addition with the garden Dome.

The peace and relaxation of this ‘Gem’ of a location along with the wildlife is second to none!

Peter, Jill, Beth and furry friends 🙂

June 2023

Butlers Cottage was a lovely property, beautifully appointed and very peaceful. We loved watching the wildlife at the bird feeders early morning and evening.

It was lovely to walk down the path onto the beach for strolls and an easy walk into Sandsend to enjoy a leisurely drink and meal.
Whilst we used our car for travel it was good to know that there was a bus stop at the end of the drive should we require it.
We spent a couple of days covering the sights of Whitby then on our other days our trips included Staithes, Saltburn, Helmsley, Malton, Pickering and Goathland. It was an excellent base to explore the North Yorkshire Moors and coast.
Highly recommend a stay at Butlers Cottage and the booking process / information from Beautiful Escapes was excellent.

Wow! What a stunning cottage!!! We have stayed in a lot of different holiday cottages, Butler’s Cottage is so much better that anything we have stayed in before.

We enjoyed being close to the sea and walking along the beach with Buster our border Terrier.

Tip for other guests – Keep the bird feeder going and you will wood peckers, gold finches and many more birds.

This is a beautiful holiday cottage!

March 2023

We loved Butler’s cottage, it was so comfortable and tastefully decorated, the owner has thought about everything you and your dog may need, the location could not have been better, lovely and quiet with local amenities close by and just a short walk to the beach.

The weather was unkind to us but we enjoyed a walk up through the forest to the bar, saw the deer each time, what a wonderful sight.

The Hart Inn is a lovely local pub in the village so much to see and do, great walking all around the area.

We would definitely book with Beautiful Escapes again, the whole booking experience was simple and efficient, it is good to find a company that offers dog friendly cottages of such a high standard.

We hope to be back, Sue & Peter Cartwright

September 2022

Thank you for a lovely holiday. The cottage is very comfortable with all the home comforts and lots of extras too. The welcome pack was most welcome.

We enjoyed lovely walks by the sea and exploring the local countryside. The open top tour bus is a good way of seeing Whitby.

We will always remember this holiday as the one where the nation came together to mourn and celebrate H. M. The Queen.
