Half-term activites for all the family in Yorkshire!

19th February 2020

Yorkshire is brimming with activities for all the family this half term. Whether you want to explore our miles of dramatic coastline, ramble over roving moorland or explore the delights of the dales, there is so much space to discover and get outdoors with your family on a visit to Yorkshire.

We love the campaign by the National Trust encouraging us to make space for wildlife in our gardens and they have some really fun workshops running over the half term. If you visit Brimham Rocks this half term you can marvel at the rock formations as well as learn all about the birds that call it home and also make a bird box to take home and see what feathered friends come to visit you.

It’s the 36th annual Jorvik Viking Festival in the City of York with an exciting programme of events around this year’s theme of the Voyages of the Vikings. As well as visiting the Jorvik Viking Centre, you can roll up and hear stories of Viking sagas from the Jorvik’s hilarious story tellers, join in on crafting sessions or prepare your sword for a battle with the Vikings! A great way to bring to life the stories of the Vikings.

Dalby Forest are marking 100 years of the forestry commission with a fabulous exhibition of photographs by Scarborough based photographer Tony Bartholomew recording how the flora and fauna of forests changes over one year. Why not bring along your bikes and, after you’ve taken in the exhibition, tackle some of the epic natural cycling and mountainbiking trails through the forest, with tracks suitable for families through to the more hair raising! Or for something a little more sedate or for little feet, follow one of the walking trails and marvel at the incredible trees making up the forest.

Castle Howard is one of the most magnificent historical houses in Yorkshire! As well as the incredible house to look around and marvel at there are some great children’s activities. It has a fantastic large outdoor playground that is sure to get that energy used up! We’re sure the grown ups will enjoy the Boathouse cafe for a coffee overlooking the beautiful lake.

If the winds are subsiding why not slip on the wellies and head to the stunning North Yorkshire coastline. Runswick Bay is one of the best places in the UK for beachcoming, bring your fishing net and see what wonders you can discover in the magical rock pools!

If you’re in the Yorkshire Dales this half term how about exploring the childhood home of Richard 111 at Middleham Castle, with a great viewing platform where you can see dramatic views over Wensleydale. How about heading into Middleham afterwards and see if you can catch the racehorces on their way back from the gallops to the stables, a must for any horse lover!
