Museums and Exhibitions
The best way to learn about Yorkshire’s rich history is through the many museums, heritage centres, and exhibitions spread across the county and covering every aspect of the culture that shaped the Yorkshire we know today. There are interactive attractions and displays to make each experience unique and fun for all ages. The City of York is home to loads of popular places like the National Railway Museum, Yorkshire Museum, and the Jorvik Viking Centre while Halifax offers the National Children’s Museum.
Indoor Adventures
Thornton Hall Country Park in Skipton is home to just one of Yorkshire’s numerous indoor nature and animal experiences where visitors can enjoy interactive encounters with farm animals and make use of the indoor play barn. Tropical World in Leeds invites all to meet their exciting and exotic animals at their large indoor wildlife park no matter the weather. There are also numerous soft play centres, obstacle courses, climbing centres, and trampoline parks where little ones can jump, skip, and play to their heart’s content.
Get Energised
Little ones seem to have unlimited energy, so what better way to spend a rainy day than a day packed with activities to get them moving. The county provides plenty of options when it comes to indoor sports and activities including bowling, mini golf, roller and ice skating. If that’s not enough, there’s no shortage of leisure centres offering courts and classes for all types of sports in addition to swimming pools (some even have waterslides!)
Unleash your Creativity
For days when you’d rather swap high energy for peace and quiet, there are plenty of welcoming places where you’ll find creative outlets for all ages. You’ll find places like The Discovery Zone at the Great Yorkshire Show in July as well as libraries and community centres with fun and educational events scheduled during school holidays. Rain or shine, there are arts and crafts workshops all over Yorkshire including the North York Arts School in Scarborough where you’ll find pottery painting and ceramics classes for the whole family. For foodies, be sure to check out the range of cooking and baking classes on offer in cookery schools across the historical county or head to York’s Chocolate Story and try your hand at chocolate making in the home of some of your favourite sweet treats.
Live Action
Make sure to keep an eye out for the action-packed shows and events held throughout the year in and around Yorkshire’s well-known cities and towns. There will be cinema screenings and events held, showing family-friendly classics and making for a perfect day out.
