Castle Howard
Despite its name, Castle Howard is one of the finest country houses in England rather than a traditional castle. Situated just 15 miles north of York and dating back to the 17th century, Castle Howard showcases the grand interiors and famous domed ceiling that came from over 100 years of construction. The estate is spread over around 1,000 acres of gardens and well-maintained parkland in North Yorkshire and features lakes, fountains, monuments, and more. Skipton Castle
With a remarkable history stretching back to the 11th century, Skipton Castle tells the story of war and nobility in the popular market town of Skipton. Located in North Yorkshire, Skipton Castle is a grade I-listed medieval castle, one of the best preserved and most complete in England, known for its notable role in the English Civil War. During that time, the castle withstood a three-year siege and has since withstood the test of time with many of its original features remaining today, these include the Great Hall chapel, towers, and dungeon. Perfect for history lovers, the castle is open all year round.
Bolton Castle
Located in the scenic Yorkshire Dales, Bolton Castle offers panoramic views across the dales from its imposing position over Wensleydale. Standing at around 100 feet tall, this 14th century figure was originally built as a commanding fortress and family residence and still towers over the town today. Built from locally sourced stone and one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the country, the castle was damaged during the English Civil War but still boasts many of its original features including the Great Chamber and its towers. Bolton Castle was also home to an imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots for approximately six months in the 1500s, making it an excellent choice for history buffs.
Knaresborough Castle
Overlooking the River Nidd and offering views of the Knaresborough Viaduct, the ruins of Knaresborough Castle sit in the heart of Knaresborough in North Yorkshire. Originally built in 1100, shortly after the Norman Conquest, the castle has since become a royal castle that has been rebuilt, expanded, and strengthened by several medieval kings. Due to damage caused to the castle during the English Civil War, much of the stone was later removed for repurposing yet substantial ruins can be seen today including parts of the castle walls. The castle’s history is deeply intertwined with that of the medieval town and makes for a fascinating day out.
Scarborough Castle
Scarborough Castle, much like Scarborough itself, is celebrated for its stunning sea views. Perched atop a dramatic, 16-acre headland overlooking the North Sea and Scarborough’s two bays, this medieval castle was also established following the Norman Conquest. The site has a rich history of 3,000 years of occupation, prehistoric settlements, and Roman involvement with its keep being built in the 12th century. Scarborough Castle’s privileged seafront position gave it control over the coastline and its surroundings which lead to its important role in the English Civil War as a royal fortress.
Richmond Castle
Found in the very centre of the charming market town of Richmond in North Yorkshire, Richmond Castle is yet another of the historic castles dating back to the Norman Conquest with construction beginning in the late 11th century. The castle sits atop a cliff overlooking the valley of the River Swale and boasts one of the most impressive Norman keeps in England, which accounts for much of the surviving remains. There are also surviving ruins of the curtain wall that surrounds castle enclosure alongside those of its main buildings, and towers, all waiting to be explored.
Helmsley Castle
On the edge of the picturesque North York Moors, you’ll find the historic Helmsley Castle in the quaint market town of Helmsley. The castle was built in the 12th century as a medieval fortress and has since been converted into an Elizabethan mansion, transformed into a Civil War stronghold, and today stands as a fascinating Georgian ruin. The castle tells its long history of Civil War occupation and demolition through surviving ruins including imposing towers and walls.
