Activities for Rainy Days in North Yorkshire

17th March 2026

Is there anything more beautiful than the sun shining down on the scenic landscapes of North Yorkshire? Luckily, for the days with a little drizzle or a heavy downpour, of which there are a few, the county offers residents and visitors a whole host of family-friendly, pet-friendly, and weather-friendly activities.

The City of York

The City of York, founded by the Romans and with an evident Viking past, is home to several museums, experiences, and historic sites to explore – even on the dreariest of days. York Minster allows visitors to take in its historic architecture, which took 250 years to build, and view the city from its highest vantage point. The city also offers interactive, family-friendly experiences in the Jorvik Centre, York Dungeons, and York Chocolate Story – which showcases the city’s past as a chocolate manufacturing centre since the Victorian era. With a myriad of local delicacies to try and a whopping 365 pubs to choose from, you can’t go wrong.

Wensleydale Creamery

Located in Hawes, amongst the scenic landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales, the Wensleydale Creamery invites visitors to learn about traditional cheese-making processes used by the Cistercian Monks as far back as the 12th century. Perhaps more importantly, it permits you to sample delightful cheeses such as Red Leicester, Cheddar, and the iconic Wensleydale – granted European Protected Geographical Indication status but perhaps more widely known as the favourite cheese of Wallace and Gromit. The site offers a range of demonstrations and activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal

One of North Yorkshire’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, near Ripon, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal is a fantastic location for an unforgettable outing, rain or shine. A Roman and Gothic mix of medieval architecture can be admired in the remarkable ruins and stone structures which provide some shelter from the elements. Fully indoor facilities include the visitor centre, complete with interactive displays and exhibits as well as an excellent restaurant and tea shop.

National Railway Museum

York is known to train enthusiasts as the birthplace of railway pioneer George Hudson – who is responsible for the London to Edinburgh line passing through York- and is home to the incredible National Railway Museum. This site is full of interactive, family-friendly fun and boasts the largest collection of train carriages in the world. The museum is the only place outside of Japan where you can marvel at a Bullet Train and the museum also houses The Mallard, the fastest steam train in the world.

Castle Howard

Castle Howard is a magnificent stately home near York with pristine gardens and a rich history. Views over the verdant land can be enjoyed from inside the house where its stunningly intricate architecture is on full display – including in the 70-foot tall Grand Hall. The site is known to host seasonal events throughout the year and currently houses an artistic exhibition by Sir Tony Cragg with impressive sculptures scattered around the gardens as well as works on paper which can be found inside the historic rooms of the house.

National Park Centres

All is not lost if the weather takes an unexpected turn on your next visit to the North York Moors National Park. Danby Lodge, located on the outskirts of the village, and Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, simultaneously provide shelter from the elements and extraordinary views of the surrounding areas. There are also indoor exhibits and opportunities to learn about the beautiful local areas while staying cosy and dry.

Captain Cook Museum, Whitby

Aside from the town’s famous ties to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Whitby is also known to be the place where Captain James Cook learned his trade and became a seaman. The Captain Cook Museum provides an interesting insight into the life and impact of the famous explorer and his travels. There are artefacts and maps on display to educate visitors of all ages on maritime history and Captain Cook’s exciting adventures.

Harrogate Turkish Baths

If you’re looking for a complete escape from the unpredictable weather, Turkish Baths Harrogate is the ideal location to unwind and transport yourself. Boasting the most fully restored Victorian Turkish Baths in Britain, a wide range of traditional treatments are on offer as well as guided tours of the Moorish architecture by a resident historian. A truly indulgent experience and an opportunity for relaxation and rejuvenation in the steam room, heated chambers, and plunge pool.

Skipton Castle

Medieval architecture and history are waiting to be explored in the heart of Skipton. The incredibly well-preserved, more-than-900-year-old Skipton Castle attracts visitors to lose themselves in the gorgeous grounds, take in the panoramic views from the watchtower, and dive deep into the dungeons. Guests can learn about the castle’s long and impressive history then take a break in the picnic area or newly added tearoom.

Afternoon Tea

An authentic Yorkshire experience would not be complete without an indulgent afternoon tea. The beloved Betty’s Tea Rooms come to mind when searching for an authentic experience thanks to their five locations across North Yorkshire and signature currant and cherry bun. Although, there is no shortage of tea rooms throughout the county with plenty of them serving proper Yorkshire tea and delightful fat rascals.
