As if the natural beauty of the area wasn’t enough, there are incredible ruins including Rievaulx Abbey and Byland Abbey as well as the formidable fortress of Helmsley Castle. The North York Moors’ mining past can be discovered by visiting Rosedale Bank Top while its ancient history can be witnessed through standing stones and burial mounds. There are cute villages like Goathland, Hutton-le-Hole, and Thornton Le Dale; traditional market towns like Helmsley and Pickering; and enchanting coastal towns like Staithes, Robin Hood’s Bay, and Whitby. Why not stop off in one of the local pubs and tearooms to sample some of the traditional Yorkshire delicacies on offer to finish off a lovely day of exploring?

The wide-open spaces of the North York Moors and its national park means that there’s no shortage of room for activities including walking, cycling, and hiking along trails, footpaths, and beaches. Ramblers can take to the Cleaveland Way or embark on the Lyke Wake Walk or any of the circular walks from North Yorkshire’s scenic villages. There’s plenty of cycling and mountain biking routes as well as bridleways, ideal for horse riding. Yorkshire’s heritage is on full display at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway where visitors can hop aboard and take a trip back in time to experience the beauty of the Yorkshire countryside from a new perspective. What’s more, the North York Moors National Park is home to the Nature and Star Hub and is a designated International Dark Sky Reserve, making it the perfect place to gaze upon the stars and enjoy the beauty of the night sky. The native wildlife means birdwatchers and photographers can have a field day all throughout the year. There are also seasonal events, fairs, and activities for all the family to enjoy, from Christmas markets and shows to summer festivals, the North York Moors is the place to be, no matter the season.
