The Wishing Well is a pretty little cottage just for two on Millgate, in the Georgian town of Richmond, North Yorkshire. Every house on this street is different, built at different times, yet all overlook the steep bank that eventually winds down to the River Swale. Known as the gateway to the Dales, Richmond is the perfect location for exploring all that this beautiful part of Yorkshire has to offer.

The cottage has been lovingly restored by owners Maria & Jeff and combines original architectural features with contemporary additions, creating a comfortable, unique property with light, airy rooms, historic grandeur, and everything you need for a romantic trip away. As soon as you walk in, you’ll find yourself standing on the original stone flagstone floors, one of the many remnants of the cottage’s heritage. In this space, the wood-burning stove provides warmth and immediate atmosphere, and the ultra-comfortable sofa is the perfect place from which to watch your favourite film on the Smart TV.

As the name suggests, it really does have it’s very own Well, it is partially exposed in the kitchen and makes an interesting talking point. Outside there is a lovely little terrace which offers a peep to nearby Richmond Castle.

There is a secure garage suitable for a small car, cycles, kayaks, etc.

Wishing Well

One of Jeff & Maria’s three daughters, Claire, researched the history of the well and we are delighted to share Claire’s findings with you.

Great care was taken during an earlier renovation to preserve this wonderful feature, a testament to the history and heritage of the cottage. It is believed to originate from within the curtilage of the castle walls. According to the Yorkshire Archaeological Journal, the well supplied protected drinking water to the castle and the local population of Richmond both in times of war and peace.

The well at No19 is the only one recorded in the annals of the castles history and as they were often costly and a time consuming element in the building of the castle it could be believed that this was the source of drinking water for the castle garrison and for the civil population, during times of siege.

The street Millgate was built circa 1700, around the well that was no longer inside the castle walls during this century. The people of Richmond continued to use it for day-to-day necessities until it was built over.

Great little place in a fantastic location. The cottage is really well equipped with high quality fixtures and fittings and has been done with a keen eye on the detail. We stayed for three nights with our two dogs and had a wonderful time. Would highly recommend.

The cottage is lovely and has everything you need, everything is top quality. The location in the town is brilliant, it is so close to the shops, restaurants and the river Swale. We found Richmond to be an extremely friendly place and they love dogs. We particularly enjoyed eating at The Kings Head hotel and The Fleece. We found the best way to park the car was to use the 2 hour disc parking in the market place and buy a two-week parking ticket (£30) which enabled us to park in any car park in Richmond and other towns in Richmondshire. A great holiday.

January 2023

Brill week in this lovely cottage. Richmond is lovely and the surrounding area is fab – loads of lovely walks, and at the end of the day continuing back to The Wishing Well was a treat. Thanks Maria & Jeff for the lovely basket of goodies – they were great and much appreciated.

We have had the most lovely week staying in this beautiful cottage. Lovely lunch at the Station and walk to Easby Abbey with an ice-cream on the way. Highlight was No. 29 for a gorgeous Tapas treat and gin or 2!! Thank you for having us, loved every minute.

Thank you for an amazing place to stay over New Year. Loads of great walks with the dogs and so nice to come back to a lovely cottage right in the middle of town. A very special place and would love to stay again sometime.

What an amazing, quaint little cottage. Very well thought out with lovely touches of the wine, snacks etc. perfect location near to the town with everything you need. We ate at The Kings Head, food and service was amazing. Did the circular walk to Easby Abbey which is a must. Very sad to be leaving but we will defiantly be returning.

We loved Richmond and Wishing Well cottage! 2 very satisfied customers.

Lovely relaxing week in an excellent cottage. Lovely welcome basket and idyllic setting close to the town, we have barely used the car. Fantastic week to celebrate my 50th birthday. Richmond and The Wishing Well defiantly have us wanting to come back.

January 2022

Hello Angela,

Happy new year and thank you very much for making Wishing Well Cottage possible for us.  I did send Maria, the owner, a thank you text as she was kindly checking up on us.  I’ve rented properties rather than stay in hotels for years and years and this property really stands out as very well equipped and clean.  Little touches like dishcloths, dishwasher tablets being available (although we took our own they often aren’t), access to Netflix, salt and pepper in the kitchen (ditto) are much appreciated.  Frequently places are so sterile its difficult to self cater or feel ‘at home’.  I dread opening the kitchen cupboards to find them all empty.  We would highly recommend The Wishing Well to anyone thinking of staying here, it is perfect in every way.

Mr & Mrs M

The cottage is absolutely perfect thank you. Everything was just great when we arrived, had a lovely supper and a good night’s sleep. Enjoyed a circular walk out to Aske Hall.

The place is gorgeous. Thank you, Don’t want to go home!
We’ve had a fantastic week’s stay at The Wishing Well, such a beautiful cottage, great location and very welcoming.
Thank you for our stay, we all thoroughly enjoyed all that Yorkshire has to offer and hope to visit again in the near future.
We’ve had a wonderful stay here. The Wishing Well is beautiful and a great place to return to after a day out walking. The river here is spectacular – we enjoyed our walk to Easby Abbey and we would recommend a walk further afield – a circular from Muker to Keld. Waterfall and wilderness were thoroughly enjoyed by all.
We have had some nice meals and would recommend No. 29 Tapas, Rustique restaurant and The Little Drummer Boy tea rooms.
Thank you for a great stay.

We’ve had such a gorgeous stay at The Wishing Well, it’s been so nice to escape form the city of Manchester and come to beautiful Richmond. We’ve lit the fire every night and our girls (Lady and Baby both chihuahua’s) have enjoyed every second! The weekend was spent visiting the Castle, walks along the river and lots of yummy food – highly recommend No.29 for Tapas. Today we were visiting the Dales! The Cottage has everything you need and seeing the well in the kitchen just makes it extra special.

Thank you for making our stay in Richmond perfect – we will definitely be back,

This was our first time in Richmond and what a fab week we had! The cottage is in a perfect location to explore. The walk to Easby Abbey is a lovely circular, flat walk which was ideal for our older dog. We ate out mainly and most places we found were dog friendly. We tried Rustique which was beautiful and The Fleece hotel. The Indian Amontola didn’t allow dogs but we did have two gorgeous take-aways.

The Wishing Well is very welcoming and clean and it was lovely to be treated to wine, beer and crisps on our arrival as well as beautiful flowers. You truly have a little gem with this cottage. This won’t be our last stay in Richmond.

Thank you.

P.S. the small garage for our little car was a god send.

We enjoyed many beautiful breakfasts on the terrace and cooking with the fantastic local produce. The cottage was so well equipped and has clearly been lovingly refurbished. We spent so much time outside exploring the stunning countryside and feel thoroughly refreshed. Thank you again.

Thank you for a wonderful stay. This was my first visit to Richmond and I very much hope not my last. It is a great little town with loads of shops and plenty of riverside walks to stretch my legs. The cottage is also a delight – especially for a quick, sunny breakfast looking up to the castle. I’ve had a fantastic time here, and look forward to returning at some point in the future. September 2020.
