Escape to Yorkshire to experience the dark skies festival

5th February 2020

The Dark Skies Festival runs from the 14th February to 1st March across the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Parks with stellar events to learn about the glittering night sky which can be seen so clearly from our beloved Yorkshire National Parks. We have the perfect escapes for you to use as a base if you’re planning on visiting for the festival.

The festival is perfectly timed whether you want to escape for that romantic break around Valentine’s day for just the two of you or if you’re looking for a self catering getaway for the half term break to have some new adventures as a family in the school holiday.

There are so many activities and events running over the festival, we’re sure there is something that will captivate you and your family. If you are on a family break with children there is plenty to get involved with and ignite the stargazing passion! There are fun activities for all ages including crafting sessions based on Van Gogh’s Starry Skies painting, spooky ghost walks and even a galactic treasure hunt! You can find more information and book onto the sessions on the festival website.

If it’s just the two of you how about joining in a stargazing walk leading over the coastal path from Robin Hood’s Bay or head to Whitby for a workshop on capturing nighttime photography of the stars. Or simply take advantage of the minimal light pollution in the National Parks and see what constellations you can spot right from your private terrace in one of our beautiful escapes in Yorkshire. All you need are some toasty gloves, a cosy blanket and maybe a hot chocolate to fuel the star spotting!

Chequers is ideally located in the North York Moors and the perfect base for taking part in the various festival activities. It’s close to the village of Osmotherley, the cottage overlooks an expanse of moorland with epic walks and rambling straight from the front door you’ll be perfectly placed for enjoying those starry nights. Chequers sleeps four guests over two en suite rooms with lots of living space including a kitchen complete with range cooker and farmhouse table, a large dining room and sumptuous sofas to relax by the open fire.

Millbrook is a wonderful cottage in the heart of Robin Hood’s Bay, a picturesque old fishing village along the North Yorkshire Coast. It’s also the starting point for some of the stargazing walks as part of the dark skies festival. The self catering cottage cottage sleeps four over two double bedrooms and is perfect for couples or families with children over 5. Children will love learning about the history of the Bay as a smuggler’s haunt!
